Establishing a 5G Fund for Rural America
In this document, the Federal Communications Commission (Commission or FCC) takes important and necessary steps to implement the 5G Fund for Rural America (5G Fund) to support the build out of advanced, 5G mobile wireless broadband networks for those who live, work, and travel in rural areas. The Commission also in this document resolves the issues raised in the five pending petitions for reconsideration of its 2020 5G Fund Report and Order.
What this rule actually says
The FCC created a funding program to help build 5G wireless networks in rural America. This is infrastructure policy—it's about which telecom companies get money to install cell towers and broadband in underserved areas. It has nothing to do with AI software, data practices, or how apps work.
Who it applies to
This regulation does not apply to indie AI founders in any meaningful way.
- If you're building AI software (medical scribes, hiring tools, chatbots, etc.)—this doesn't affect you.
- If you're a telecom company or broadband provider applying for FCC grants to build rural 5G infrastructure—this applies to you.
- If you rely on internet connectivity to run your service—you might *benefit* from better rural broadband eventually, but you have no compliance obligations.
- All jurisdictions: This is a U.S. federal program, but it regulates infrastructure buildout, not software or data handling.
- All AI use cases: Whether your AI touches healthcare data, hiring decisions, or customer support—this rule doesn't regulate your product.
